The Size of Singapore

I have wondered since I moved here how big Singapore really is. In our little pocket world atlas it's barely visible. So I asked a friend, and he said that it is 25 miles west to east and 15 miles north to south.

That boggles my mind. I could drive through Singapore several times on my way from Rochester to Minneapolis. This is a good thing for me, because it means that if I get lost, I can't even get too lost. Actually, getting lost in my mind is just finding another way not to get somewhere. And really, unless you get stuck on the road to Malaysia, face it - it's an island. If you hit the ocean, turn around.

So that's what I've been thinking about today. That and Madagascar. The movie, not the island, cause we saw it today with the kids. First movie in a theater for them. They liked it.

A marathon is 26.4 miles and a 1/2 marathon is 13.2. I could run the entire distance from north to south if I traind for 20 days.

P.S. Thanks for the HOPE. Perhaps if there is a child number two this would be a name choice. Then I would always be reminded of the hope we have.

Do you ever get island fever? I always get it when we are on the islands in Thailand. Singapore is obviously bigger than those islands but I was just wondering if the smallness factor ever gets to you or if you don't really notice it because it's not "tiny" like the Thailand islands are. Just curious. :)

I guess I don't - maybe because I'm such homebody. And maybe because I don't often see the ocean. I had this illusion that all roads led to the beach, but in most places along the shore you can't actually see the ocean because of shipyards or something.

And if we're desperate, we could always take the bridge to Malaysia. :)
